Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No, you do not need a referral to see a psychologist. You can book an appointment directly.
However, if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate for your sessions, you will need a referral and a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan from your doctor.
The standard consult rate is $200 per 50 minute session.
-
What is a Medicare rebate for psychology sessions?
A Medicare rebate is a partial reimbursement from the Australian Government that helps reduce the out-of-pocket cost of seeing a psychologist. To access this rebate, you must first obtain a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP.
The plan allows you to claim a set amount back from Medicare for each eligible psychology session.
The Medicare rebate for seeing a registered general psychologist is currently $93.35 per session (as of 2025). The rebate helps reduce the cost, it does not cover the full session fee. As a result, there is often an out-of-pocket "gap" payment that you will need to pay.
Currently, Medicare covers up to 10 individual sessions and 10 group sessions per calendar year under a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
-
Is an ADHD assessment covered by Medicare?
No, ADHD assessments are generally not covered by Medicare. This means there is no Medicare rebate available for the assessment process. ADHD assessments typically involve a comprehensive evaluation, including clinical interviews, behavior questionnaires, and psychological testing, which are not classified under standard Medicare-funded services.
As a result, the full cost of the ADHD assessment is privately billed. Some clients may be able to claim a portion of the cost through private health insurance, depending on their level of extras cover. You are encouraged to check with your insurer for details.
-
How do I claim the Medicare rebate after my session?
After you pay for your session, I will provide you with a paid invoice. You can then easily claim your rebate by uploading the invoice through the Medicare app, through your MyGov account linked to Medicare, or by visiting a Medicare Service Centre. The rebate is usually paid into your bank account within a few days.
-
Can I use private health insurance to cover the cost?
Yes, if you have private health insurance with extras cover that includes psychology services, you may be able to claim a partial rebate for your sessions. The amount covered will depend on your insurer and your specific policy. Please check directly with your health fund to confirm your eligibility and rebate amount.
-
What happens if I use all 10 Medicare sessions?
Once you have used all 10 Medicare-rebated psychology sessions within the calendar year, you will not be able to claim further rebates until the new year begins on January 1st.
If you wish to continue therapy after using your 10 sessions, you can still see your psychologist privately by paying the full session fee without a Medicare rebate. Some clients may also choose to use private health insurance (if available) to help cover ongoing costs.
-
Can you see NDIS Clients?
Yes. I can see NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. I can only see clients who manage their own funding or work with a plan manager can use their NDIS funding to access his services, including therapy and psychological assessments.
